The best free AI video generator depends on what you need to make. Adobe Firefly offers limited daily generations on selected video models. HeyGen offers a recurring allowance for avatar and presenter videos. Runway is an option for a one-time evaluation, with credits that do not replenish.
The important distinction is recurring free access versus a one-time trial. A free account, a free preview, and a free downloadable video are also different offers. This guide separates them so you can choose a tool without discovering the real limit after spending an afternoon on a project.
Terms checked October 7, 2026. This is a comparison of official plan documentation, not a hands-on quality benchmark. We publish HowWorks and include its signup offer with that relationship disclosed. For broader capabilities and paid options, see our best AI video generators guide.
Free AI video generators: the practical comparison
The first table covers options with documented free access or a welcome allocation. “Not verified” means we could not establish that detail from the sources reviewed; it does not mean the feature is unavailable.
| Tool | What you can get without buying a plan | Refresh or expiration | Visible watermark | Card requirement |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Adobe Firefly | Limited daily generations, including selected video models | Daily limits refresh; amount and models can change | Free-video export policy not verified here | Not verified |
| HeyGen | Up to 3 videos per month, up to 1 minute each | Monthly video allowance | Yes on free-user videos | No card required |
| Runway | 125 signup credits on a limited model selection | One-time; no expiration or refresh | Yes on Free-plan videos | Not verified |
| HowWorks | 100 signup credits | Welcome allocation; no monthly refill promised | Not verified in this comparison | Not verified |

These allowances are not comparable units. Three presenter videos and 125 model credits describe different work. Neither tells you how many usable cinematic shots you will finish. A credit budget must cover the settings you choose and the revisions you decide to make.
Recurring free access: Firefly and HeyGen
Adobe Firefly: selected models with daily limits
Firefly is worth checking if you want to experiment with generated visual clips over several days. Adobe currently advertises free daily generation across selected image, video, and audio models. Its FAQ says limits refresh daily and that available models, features, and amounts can change. It does not provide a universal free-video count. Adobe Firefly, generative credit FAQ.
Use the free account to see whether the video model you need is included before planning a series around it. Access to one model does not establish access to every partner model or setting. Also distinguish the ongoing free offer from a trial of a paid Adobe plan; the signup and renewal terms can differ.
We have not verified a blanket visible-watermark policy for every free Firefly video export. Download a sample before promising a clean deliverable. Metadata describing AI provenance is a different question from a logo visibly burned into the image.
HeyGen: a recurring allowance for presenter videos
HeyGen fits a different task: a presenter delivering a script. Its pricing page lists up to three free videos monthly, each up to one minute, and explicitly says no credit card is required. Premium features have limited trial access. HeyGen pricing.
For an introduction, a short lesson, or a script rehearsal, that format may match your goal more closely than a cinematic clip generator. It is not an equivalent substitute for animating an environment or producing a visual-effects shot.
The export caveat matters: HeyGen's help center says free-user videos include its watermark and cannot remove it on Free. Treat a clean final export as a separate requirement when evaluating the plan. HeyGen watermark help.
One-time free credit options: Runway and HowWorks
Runway: a finite evaluation budget
Runway's Free plan includes 125 credits. They are granted once, do not expire, and do not refresh. Its model selection can change, and every video generated on Free carries a Runway watermark. Buying additional credits requires an eligible paid plan. Runway Free plan details.
This makes Runway an evaluation option rather than a monthly production budget. Use the allocation to answer a concrete question: can the available model handle the subject and motion your project needs? Save the settings and output so you have something useful to compare when deciding whether to pay.
Do not assume an upgrade retroactively cleans an existing free video. Verify the provider's treatment of earlier outputs before relying on that path. The documented promise concerns generating without a watermark on a qualifying plan.
HowWorks: signup credits with model-dependent costs
HowWorks currently offers 100 signup credits. We include our own product for transparency, not as the winner of an independent quality test. The welcome grant is shared platform credit, not a dedicated recurring video allowance. See HowWorks pricing.
Before generating, inspect the available video options and the displayed charge. The balance does not imply that every video model is free or that a fixed number of clips is included. A longer or differently configured request may have a different cost.
Use a welcome allocation to evaluate the workflow with one specific brief. Credit expiration and a universal watermark policy are not established in this comparison. Check the current account terms and your downloaded result if either determines whether the tool is suitable.
Popular tools that do not belong in the recurring-free shortlist
These tools are included because readers frequently encounter them in free-generator lists. Their current public terms need a different label.
| Tool | What current official information establishes | How to classify it |
|---|---|---|
| Pika | Free account lists 0 credits per month, with paid credit packs | Free account; no documented recurring generation allowance |
| Google Flow | Requires an eligible Google AI or Workspace subscription | Subscription access; no extra charge for qualifying Workspace users |
| Luma | Current product information lists Plus, Pro, Ultra, and Enterprise, with trial credits | Trial access; no verified general recurring-free video allowance |
Pika: no watermark does not mean no generation cost
Pika's current canonical pricing page lists Free with zero monthly credits and credit packs. It also lists no watermark, while excluding a commercial license from Free. A top-up is a purchase rather than a subscription. Pika pricing.
That combination answers two different questions: you can hold a free account, and an output may have no visible brand mark, but the published plan does not establish an ongoing free generation budget. Older articles quoting a monthly allocation should not be treated as the terms of the current offer. Check which Pika product and account you are using before applying a plan description.
Google Flow: eligibility comes before credits
Google's current getting-started page requires an AI Plus, Pro, or Ultra subscription, or qualifying Workspace access. Eligible Workspace users receive 50 daily credits at no extra charge. Google also requires verified age of at least 18 and a supported region. Google Flow access requirements.
Existing subscription access can be useful, but it is not a free plan for everyone. Flow outputs contain invisible SynthID marks; visible watermarking is configurable except where Google applies it automatically in India, South Korea, and Vietnam. Check regional and account conditions before promising an unmarked export.
Luma: distinguish current trial access from older Dream Machine plans
Luma's current product information identifies Ray3.2 and lists paid individual plans plus free trial credits. Older Dream Machine documentation remains searchable, so an old free-plan description is not reliable evidence of the current offer. We have not verified a general recurring free-video allowance or complete current trial terms. Luma's official product information, current pricing.
If Luma is your preferred workflow, inspect the actual trial at signup: whether payment details are required, when credits expire, which models are included, and what happens when the trial ends. Keep it in the trial category until those conditions are clear.
How to make the most of a small free allowance
Choose the deliverable before the tool. “A talking presenter reads my script” and “a photograph becomes a moving scene” need different capabilities. Free credits spent in the wrong category will not resolve that mismatch.
- Write one test brief. Specify the subject, one action, camera movement, and intended use. Avoid spending your first allowance on several unrelated ideas.
- Check the cost before submitting. Note model, duration, resolution, aspect ratio, and whether audio is included. Keep a little capacity for a revision.
- Inspect the result at normal playback speed. Look for unwanted motion, distorted details, and a subject that changes appearance. An attractive thumbnail is insufficient.
- Download immediately. Check whether export is included, inspect the visible mark, and open the file in the editor you intend to use.
- Record the actual decision. Did the tool produce a usable draft for your purpose, and what would finishing it require? A promising preview with an unacceptable export limit is still a poor fit for that project.
These are suggested evaluation steps, not results from a test we performed. They help you gather your own evidence without turning a free trial into aimless regeneration.
For example, if you need several matching shots, test continuity before spending credits on a final high-resolution export. If you need a presenter, test pronunciation and pacing with the hardest sentence first. If you are animating a product photo, check the product's shape and identifying details throughout the clip.
Watermarks, downloads, and commercial use are separate checks
A visible watermark appears in the picture. An invisible watermark or provenance metadata identifies generated content without necessarily displaying a logo. “No watermark” marketing language may address only the first category.
If the downloaded footage needs enlargement, compare video upscalers and their free limits; a free generation allowance does not necessarily include a 4K export.
Also distinguish generation from delivery. A tool may let you view an output while imposing different conditions on downloading, resolution, or removing a brand mark. Evaluate the file you would actually publish, not just the player inside the app.
Commercial permission is another separate check. A watermark-free video is not automatically approved for an advertisement, client project, or monetized channel. Pika's current table, for example, separately lists watermark and commercial-license availability. Read the terms of the plan used to make the output, and check rights to any uploaded photographs, voices, logos, or music.
Finishing the video can involve costs beyond generation: narration, captions, editing, and sound. If you need a soundtrack, our guide to adding music to a video covers that next step. Assess the whole deliverable before choosing a subscription just because its first clip looked good.
Which free option should you start with?
Start with Firefly if recurring access to selected generative video models fits your experiment. Start with HeyGen if your deliverable is a short presenter video and a visible watermark is acceptable for the draft. Use Runway's one-time credits for a focused model evaluation. HowWorks signup credits offer another finite starting budget, with the cost determined by your selected generation.
Pika, Flow, and Luma may still be relevant to your project, but their current documented offers should not be presented as a general recurring-free video budget. Once you know the kind of video you need, compare the fuller workflows in our best AI video generators guide, then check the current plan and one real downloaded result before committing.
