For free local image upscaling, start with Upscayl. For a dedicated paid desktop workflow, shortlist Topaz Gigapixel. Consider Pixelcut for a quick browser download. Let's Enhance makes megapixel limits explicit; Krea brings model choice into a broader creative workspace; Upscale.media suits occasional browser jobs and offers a route to bulk processing.
We checked official sources on October 7, 2026. These are recommendations by documented access, limits, and workflow, without a paid hands-on benchmark or image-quality scores. Disclosure: HowWorks publishes this guide and owns the Search feature mentioned below.
Best image upscalers: choose an actual entry point
The brand, application, and selected model are separate choices. Krea can expose Topaz Standard, but buying Krea is not buying a Topaz desktop license.
| Tool and access point | Useful starting job | Download or workflow boundary | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Topaz Gigapixel, Mac/PC app | Repeated enlargement in a dedicated desktop workflow | Local rendering; models include High Fidelity, Text & Shapes, and creative options. Topaz for Web is a separate browser product | Topaz plans |
| Krea, Upscale & Enhance workspace | Choose an upscaler alongside generation tools | Free basic upscaling up to 2K; paid upscalers including Topaz Standard advertise up to 22K. This is not every model's guaranteed output | Krea plans |
| Let's Enhance, web account | Prepare larger files with explicit MP limits | Free output up to 8 MP; Starter up to 256 MP. Starter input up to 64 MP or 50 MB | Plan limits |
| Upscayl, open-source desktop app | Process files locally without a subscription | Windows, macOS, Linux; batch processing. Requires compatible hardware; do not confuse it with Upscayl Cloud | Official repository |
| Upscale.media, browser uploader | Enlarge an occasional uploaded file or image URL | PNG/JPEG/WebP/HEIC; up to 8×. At 8×, input limit is 2,500 × 2,500 logged in or 1,250 × 1,250 as guest | Uploader limits |
| Pixelcut, browser Image Upscaler | Make a simple downloadable enlargement | Fast Upscale and separate Creative Upscale; JPG/PNG/HEIC input up to 50 MB and 6,000 × 6,000. Page advertises up to 16K | Tool details |
Check pixel dimensions in the downloaded file. A headline such as “16K” leaves the other edge unspecified. Megapixels equal width × height ÷ 1,000,000: 8,000 × 4,000 is 32 MP; 8,000 × 8,000 is 64 MP.
Free allowances and actual minimum payments
These are USD figures from the cited public pages, before tax. Annual billing is a larger commitment, not a month-to-month price. Where a page does not establish a reliable checkout amount, we leave it unverified.
| Tool | Free access and refresh | Named paid route / actual charge | Important condition |
|---|---|---|---|
| Topaz Gigapixel | No recurring free export allowance established here | $29 month-to-month; $149/year paid annually | Separate from Image Web; commercial tier depends on organization revenue |
| Krea | 100 compute units/day; basic upscaling up to 2K | Basic shows $9 monthly; annual charge unverified due to conflicting page figures | 5,000 monthly units are shared across tools; personal-plan units do not roll over |
| Let's Enhance | Ten credits upon signup; watermarked, up to 8 MP | Starter $12 monthly or $108/year ($9/month equivalent); 100 credits/month | Paid removes watermark; one image = one credit |
| Upscayl desktop | Free open-source app; no subscription credit reset | $0 software subscription | Hardware, electricity, and your processing time still have costs |
| Upscale.media | Three credits and three downloads/month; guest FAQ also lists one image/day | Smallest listed one-time pack: $5.99 for 60 credits | Packs valid one year; transformation cost can vary |
| Pixelcut | Up to three downloads/day, no signup or watermark | Pro checkout amount unverified in accessible pricing text | Bulk upscaling is a Pro feature |

Which option fits your images?
Topaz Gigapixel: a dedicated paid desktop workflow
Shortlist Gigapixel when enlargement is regular work and you want a desktop application with several named models. Choose a preservation-oriented model before exploring creative reconstruction. Its current subscription offers unlimited local rendering; that does not mean every cloud service shares identical limits.
Topaz's pricing page separates desktop Gigapixel from Image Web and ties standard commercial use to organizations below $1 million annual revenue. Check the appropriate license if you work for a larger business. Choose a free browser option first if you only have one casual image. Current Topaz products and licensing.
Krea: model choice inside a creative workspace
Krea is relevant if you already generate or edit images there and want enhancement in the same account. Its paid plans specifically name access to Topaz Standard. Always check the selected operation's output and unit estimate; a shared compute pool is not an image-only allowance.
The Basic page currently shows rounded annual card pricing and a different annual figure in its comparison table. We therefore do not infer a yearly minimum or divide its allowance into a universal cost per upscale. Confirm the billing selector and final charge before subscribing. Krea access and billing details.
Let's Enhance: explicit megapixel budgets
Choose it when target file size matters. A free preview does not prove access to the paid-size export.
The credit rule supports a useful cost example: Starter's $12 monthly charge divided by 100 processed images is $0.12 per image if you use all 100. Process only ten and that month's allocation is $1.20 per image, while the actual payment remains $12. Unused Starter credits can accumulate up to 600 while subscribed; they expire when the paid period ends after cancellation. Official credit rules.
Upscayl desktop: free software with a hardware tradeoff
Choose the desktop app when files should stay on your computer or repeated credit purchases are unattractive. Its official repository documents Real-ESRGAN-based processing and a Vulkan-compatible GPU requirement; check compatibility before planning a batch.
The maintainers explicitly say it is not the right tool for totally blurred or out-of-focus images. Enlargement and focus repair are different jobs. If installing software or resolving hardware compatibility would take longer than your small task, use a browser trial instead. Installation, batch notes, and limitations.
Upscale.media: occasional uploads and a bulk route
It offers a clear small prepaid pack alongside subscriptions, useful for sporadic work. The advertised per-credit number is an allocation: buying the 60-credit pack requires $5.99, not a ten-cent payment for one image. Its pricing FAQ says an upscale generally uses one credit but can vary with the transformation.
Bulk transformations require signup and run through the PixelBin console. The checked pages did not clearly establish a watermark rule, so verify a free download rather than assuming it. Pricing and bulk conditions.
Pixelcut: a straightforward free browser starting point
Try Fast Upscale first for a simple file; use Creative Upscale only when changing visual detail is acceptable. Pixelcut advertises up to three watermark-free downloads daily without login.
Its Pro bulk workflow advertises batches up to 10,000 with ZIP download. That matters for a catalog, but a free single-image result does not prove access to Pro batch processing. Verify the plan price and required export settings in the app. Single-image and bulk distinctions.
Faithful enlargement or creative editing?
Both can produce larger images, but they answer different briefs. Faithful enlargement aims to preserve the source's content. Creative upscaling permits interpretation: extra texture, redesigned details, or a more expressive appearance. Even conservative AI processing estimates information; it cannot certify an unreadable label or reconstruct historical truth.
For product photography, compare labels, stitching, logos, shape, and color against the original. For portraits, inspect eyes, teeth, hairlines, and identifying marks. For illustrations, decide whether invented brushwork belongs in the piece. Keep the source and compare crops at the same display scale so a larger preview does not create the illusion of better accuracy.
Changing a DPI/PPI tag alone adds no pixels. A 1,000 × 1,000 image becomes 16 MP only if a 4× operation enlarges both edges to 4,000 × 4,000. For printing, divide the actual pixel width by the intended pixels per inch to estimate physical width; ask your printer what resolution and color requirements apply.
A short workflow before you pay
- Specify the deliverable. Write the exact dimensions, format, transparency requirement, and batch size.
- Use a representative source. Include the difficult detail your real project must preserve.
- Start conservatively. Request the smallest enlargement that meets the job, then inspect the result.
- Download and verify. Check dimensions, watermark, file format, alpha channel if needed, and fine detail. Input PNG support alone does not prove transparent output.
- Price the whole job. Include retries, batch access, actual payment, and unused allowance before choosing annual billing.
If your input is moving footage, use our AI video upscaler comparison; processing individual stills is not a complete video workflow. If you need to create new footage from an image, see best AI video generators.
All linked vendor sources were checked October 7, 2026. Model-specific export formats, Krea's conflicting annual Basic charge, Pixelcut's paid checkout amount, and Upscale.media's unspecified watermark conditions remain items to verify in the selected application. No quality ranking or guaranteed recovery claim is implied by these documented limits.
