A brain teaser is a short problem whose difficulty is engineered, not accidental. You are given everything you need in the first two sentences. The reason you cannot solve it is that one of the facts you are certain about was never actually stated — you supplied it yourself, in the first second, without noticing.
That is the whole game. Below are 24 of them, grouped by which assumption each one attacks, because once you can name the type you are halfway to the answer. All answers are at the end, numbered to match, so nothing is spoiled while you read.
The five types, and what each one attacks

Lateral thinking (1–6)
These are the ones usually meant by "brain teasers for adults". You are given a scene that cannot be true, and you have to find the reading in which it is.
1. A woman is found dead in a locked room with no windows. There is a puddle of water beside her and broken glass on the floor. No one else entered or left. What happened?
2. A man pushes his car until he reaches a hotel, at which point he knows he is bankrupt. Why?
3. Every morning a man takes the lift from the tenth floor down to the lobby. Every evening he takes it back up to the seventh floor and walks the last three, except on rainy days, when he rides all the way. Why?
4. A photographer is found dead in his darkroom. Every print in the room is face down except one. That print shows nothing but an empty field. It is the reason he died.
5. A small-town newspaper printed a man's obituary on Tuesday. He was alive and well on Tuesday. He died on Wednesday — and the obituary was accurate down to the cause of death. The editor was never charged with anything.
6. On the first of every month a woman receives an empty envelope in the mail. She has never reported it. In the seventh month no envelope arrives — and she immediately packs a bag and leaves the country.
Deduction (7–11)
Nothing is hidden here. Every fact you need is stated; the difficulty is holding them in the right order.
7. Four people must cross a rope bridge at night with one torch. The bridge holds two people at a time, and anyone crossing must carry the torch. They cross at 1, 2, 5 and 10 minutes; a pair moves at the slower person's speed. Get everyone across in 17 minutes.
8. You have two ropes. Each burns through in exactly one hour, but neither burns at a constant rate — half a rope might take fifty minutes or ten. Measure exactly 45 minutes.
9. Three boxes are labelled APPLES, ORANGES, and MIXED. Every label is wrong. You may take one fruit from one box, without looking inside. Label all three correctly.
10. A game-show host shows you three doors. One hides a prize. You pick door 1. The host — who knows where the prize is and will always open a different, empty door — opens door 3 to show it is empty, then offers to let you switch to door 2. Should you?
11. Two guards stand at two doors; one door is safe, one is fatal. One guard always lies, the other always tells the truth, and you do not know which is which. You may ask one guard one yes-or-no question. What do you ask?
Assumption traps (12–16)
Short, and they work by getting you to read a word the common way.
12. A man is looking at a photograph. He says: "Brothers and sisters I have none, but that man's father is my father's son." Who is in the photograph?
13. How many months have 28 days?
14. A farmer has 17 sheep. All but nine run away. How many are left?
15. You are running a race and you overtake the person in second place. What position are you in?
16. A doctor gives you three pills and says to take one every half hour. How long do the pills last?
Math teasers (17–20)
The arithmetic is trivial. The setup is not.
Three of the four below are not internet puzzles at all. Numbers 17, 18 and 19 are the complete Cognitive Reflection Test — a three-item instrument introduced by Shane Frederick in "Cognitive Reflection and Decision Making" (Journal of Economic Perspectives, Vol. 19, No. 4, 2005). The paper reports the test was administered to 3,428 respondents across 35 separate studies over a 26-month period beginning in January 2003.
The finding worth knowing before you attempt them: the people who got the bat-and-ball question wrong thought it was easier than the people who got it right did. Frederick reports that respondents answering "10 cents" estimated 92 percent of people would solve it correctly, while those answering "5 cents" estimated 62 percent — and notes both figures were considerable overestimates.
That is the entire psychology of a brain teaser in one statistic. The wrong answer does not feel like a guess. It feels like the answer.
17. A bat and a ball cost £1.10 together. The bat costs £1.00 more than the ball. How much is the ball?
18. On a lake there is a patch of lilies. Every day the patch doubles. If it takes 48 days to cover the whole lake, how long does it take to cover half?
19. If five machines take five minutes to make five widgets, how long do 100 machines take to make 100 widgets?
20. You buy a horse for £60, sell it for £70, buy it back for £80 and sell it again for £90. What is your profit?
Wordplay (21–24)
Here the subject is the sentence itself, not the situation it describes.
21. What English word becomes shorter when you add two letters to it?
22. Name a word that contains all five vowels, in order, exactly once.
23. What occurs once in a minute, twice in a moment, and never in a thousand years?
24. Forward I am heavy; backward I am not. What am I?
Why lateral-thinking puzzles are the hard ones to do alone
Look back at 1–6. Every one of them is answerable — but not by staring. They are built to be solved by asking: is the woman human, was the room always locked, is the photograph's subject the point or its date.
That is why these puzzles traditionally need a second person. Someone has to know the answer and say yes, no, or irrelevant while you narrow it down. Alone, you either see it in ten seconds or you never see it, and reading the answer at the bottom of a page is not the same experience as arriving at it.
This is the gap that made us build Riddle Royale: a case you can actually interrogate. You ask anything you want in your own words, and the game answers — but never tells you the truth outright. It is the same puzzle type as 1–6, with the part that requires another person handled.
Answers
1. She was a goldfish. The glass was her bowl; a cat knocked it off the shelf.
2. He is playing Monopoly. The car is his token and the hotel is on a property he cannot pay for.
3. He cannot reach the button for anything above the seventh floor. On rainy days he has an umbrella to reach it with.
4. The value of the photograph is its date, not its content. That field was empty when he shot it — and something was later buried or built there. Developing the old negative, he recognised the location and realised he was holding evidence that fixed a timeline. Someone made sure he could not say so.
5. He wrote the obituary himself and posted it to the paper in advance, then ended his own life exactly as he had written it. The editor processed what looked like a routine family submission.
6. The empty envelope was the message. Its arrival confirmed each month that some state still held — that a person was still being watched, or still locked up. The content was never the point; the punctuality was. When it stopped, the state had ended, and she was in danger.
7. The 1 and 2 cross (2), 1 returns (1), the 5 and 10 cross (10), 2 returns (2), the 1 and 2 cross (2). Total 17. The trick is sending the two slowest together so their times overlap instead of adding.
8. Light rope A at both ends and rope B at one end simultaneously. A is consumed in 30 minutes. At that moment light B's other end; B's remaining half-hour of rope now burns from both ends and finishes in 15. 30 + 15 = 45.
9. Take one fruit from MIXED. Since every label is wrong, that box is not mixed — so whatever you drew is what it really is. If it is an apple, MIXED is really apples; then ORANGES cannot be oranges and cannot be apples, so it is mixed; and APPLES is oranges.
10. Yes, switch. Your first pick was right one time in three, and that does not change when the host — who knows where the prize is — opens a door he was always able to open. So the prize is behind the other unopened door two times in three.
This is the Monty Hall problem, and it is the best-documented case of a brain teaser whose wrong answer feels certain. After Marilyn vos Savant gave this answer in her 1990 Parade column, approximately 10,000 readers wrote in, nearly 1,000 of them holding PhDs, most insisting she was wrong — many on the letterheads of university mathematics and science departments. (The figures trace to John Tierney's 1991 New York Times report; we verified them through the encyclopedia's citation rather than the original article.)
11. Ask either guard: "If I asked the other guard which door is safe, what would he say?" — then take the opposite door. A truthful guard truthfully reports the liar's lie; a lying guard lies about the truthful answer. Either way the reply is wrong, so inverting it is right.
12. His son. "My father's son", with no siblings, is the speaker himself — so the man in the photo has the speaker as his father.
13. All twelve. Every month has 28 days; most have more.
14. Nine. "All but nine ran away" is the answer stated in the question.
15. Second. You took the second-place runner's position, not the leader's.
16. One hour. The first pill is now, the second at thirty minutes, the third at sixty.
17. 5p. If the ball were 10p the bat would be £1.10 and the total £1.20. The bat is £1.05, the ball 5p. Frederick notes that nearly everyone who does not answer 10 cents gives the correct answer — there is essentially no third response, which is what makes this a clean measure.
18. 47 days. If it doubles daily, the day before it is full it is exactly half.
19. Five minutes. Each machine takes five minutes per widget, so a hundred machines make a hundred widgets in the same five minutes.
20. £20. Two separate trades of £10 profit each. The repurchase feels like a loss but is a new transaction.
21. "Short" — add "er" and it becomes "shorter".
22. "Facetious" (a, e, i, o, u in order). "Abstemious" also works.
23. The letter M.
24. A ton.
How to get better at these
The single technique that works is boring and reliable: separate what you were told from what you supplied.
Take puzzle 1. You were told: a woman, a locked room, water, broken glass. You supplied: that "woman" means an adult human, that the water came from a container someone drank from, that the glass was a drinking glass. Two of those three were yours, not the puzzle's — and the answer lives in one of them.
Do that on any brain teaser that has you stuck and the hit rate is surprisingly high. It is also the reason the lateral-thinking type rewards asking questions over thinking harder: every question you ask is a test of one assumption, and you cannot test an assumption you have not noticed you made.
