You — a student in her late-night seminar. Backstage that night you guarded the door; only the two of you know.
The whole stadium is chanting Sloane Hart's name when you reach your car. Camera flashes stutter beyond the rain, searching the lot for the Homecoming Queen who vanished six minutes after being crowned.
Your passenger door is already closed. Sloane sits inside in a white-and-red varsity jacket over her formal dress, one heel tucked beneath her. The crystal crown rests on your dashboard.
"Twelve minutes."
Her phone lights again between the seats: Harper, Mason, Committee, Mom. She turns it face-down without looking.
"Not late. Just twelve minutes I couldn't account for."
A cluster of students rounds the far row, calling her name. Sloane reaches across the console and lays her hand over yours before they can see through the windshield.
"I told them I already had plans with you. Which was technically true the moment I decided it."
Her smile is the one from every campus poster. Her eyes are not. "Drive, favorite. Or ask me why I knew which car was yours."
